Thank You for Forty One Years of Service

In 1979 I started my electrical and plumbing business with a few hand tools, an old van, experience I took from the classroom and the real world, and  no real business model. Well, no model other than a strong work ethic. I wanted to do the best job possible, and as it says in Philippians, “In humility, value others above [myself]”.

We celebrated our 41st year of operating in central Virginia a few years ago. It’s an understatement to say the time has gone by quickly.

This was our crew of nine guys at our celebration who echo our work ethic and commitment to completing our jobs with integrity and pride. Our longest tenured employee, Alan Boxley (at left), joined our team in January 1980 and continues with us today heading up our plumbing division.  Our crew has changed slightly during the last couple of years, but each of our employees remains committed to our standard of excellent customer service, professionalism, and integrity.

We are thankful for the people from whom we've learned and for each of our customers who trust us to help with their electrical, plumbing, gas, carpentry needs.  It's an invitation we never take lightly. To all of our customers past, present, and future we thank you for the opportunity to serve and we look forward to the years to come.

Considering LED Lighting

Your lighting selection becomes more important during the shorter daylight hours of winter. With the increasing popularity of LED light fixtures we've seen some common questions among our customers. LED bulbs are energy efficient light sources that require some basic research in order to experience the full potential of the technology.

LED Lightbulb Selection

The LED lightbulbs we recommend using are manufactured by CREE. We've found that their quality and durability is far better than other brands. As a bonus, they come in almost any color or light temperature you'd want in or around your home or office.

LED bulbs are now being designed to fit almost any interior or exterior lighting need. However, use caution when you're choosing the size and style of bulb that can be adapted to an existing fixture. With improper selection, you run a risk of the retrofit not working or damaging the bulb and fixture. That can be quite costly!

Using Dimmers with LED Lightbulbs

With LED lightbulb technology there is still the problematic issue of light flicker which can cause headaches in sensitive individuals as well as damage the bulb and fixture. To help with this issue, use high-quality LED lamps (such as CREE), compatible luminaires and dimmers, and digital controls rated for use with LED lighting products.

Our Electricians and Plumbers Get Lots of Training

We are pleased to congratulate two of our plumbers, Aaron Boxley and Jonathan Henshaw, in their completion of classes in Backflow Prevention Device Training and Cross Connection Training at Daniel Technology Center of Germanna Community College. As seasoned plumbers Aaron and Jonathan are now part of our team of Backflow Prevention Device Workers.

Backflow devices at cross connections in drinking water systems prevent contamination of the drinking water that may be caused from back-siphoning of potentially contaminated water flowing back into the drinking water supply. It is also important and required that backflow devices be tested for proper function annually.

We'd also like to congratulate two of our electricians, Brandan Kilby and Jay Murray, for successfully completing the Briggs & Stratton Home Generator Systems Field Service School related to the theory and operation of air-cooled home generator systems. This was Brandan's first training class in this area, and continuing education for Jay. Standby generators continue to be wise investments for many homeowners. We are committed to keeping our electricians up to date in training so we can continue offering the best advice and service to our customers.

Standby Generator Systems for Your Home or Office

You do not need to be in the dark or without electricity again.  With a standby generator you will be able to continue using necessary systems during a power outage.  Your heating and cooling systems, water, and major appliances can all be sequenced to operate with a generator installation. 

What size generator do I need?

Sizes vary in generators, but we will help you determine the correct size based on the homeowner's need for emergency back-up power.  A site visit will help us help you determine what best suits your needs.

Where will it be located?

The generator installation must be located outside away from windows and doors within close proximity of the home's  natural or propane gas and electric service.  We usually provide a concrete pad or stone foundation per the customer's preference for the generator.

Will I have to go out in the cold, dark, or during the storm to operate the generator?

No, we prefer to set the generator installation with an automatic transfer switch so when your power is interrupted the generator automatically begins operation during a service outage.  This provides ease of operation for the homeowner and security in the event of a power outage when you are away.  You won't come home to a freezer full of spoiled, thawed food.
